Learn from my mistakes and years of experience working in adult literacy, adult education, running my own consulting business, & 25 years plus years in a high school classroom. A taste ...

Before teaching students at the beginning of the school semester I took a couple of weeks to develop a rapport, do informal assessments, (never assume previous levels of learning) to create a safe, fun classroom and environment, and to provide the philosophy behind my pedagogy.

Students had a say in what we did, how we did it, with opportunity to provide weekly feedback. It gave them a sense of ownership vital in a classroom.

I depended on Bloom's Taxonomy and comparison models to explain the levels of thinking involved in learning, so they understood why we travelled upwards, and so they could better understand how they would be assessed.

I reviewed the different ways we learn so they could see themselves, feel better in that they did not learn the same way. I adapted several philosophies to reduce student anxiety from the get-go. More on that later.

Glimpses of lessons follow, with possibly of complete lessons for purchase, with online training workshops or courses to help teachers teach various skills needed for post secondary education. Please stay tuned.

Within you will find glimpses of lessons I taught my English Language Arts & Literature Grades 11 & 12, and my Advanced 11 & 12 classes. Many lessons can be adapted and tweaked.

An interesting article below from CBC, September, 2024, on new literacy program rollout across Canada because students in elementary are having difficulties. My experience, students also struggle in high school and in being prepared for the reading expectations in post secondary.
